Unit 4: Advanced Medical Considerations

As previously mentioned, this information is not intended as a substitute for the medical advice of physicians. The reader should regularly consult a physician in matters relating to his/her health and particularly with respect to any symptoms that may require diagnosis or medical attention.

We have been tracking the application of this program in cases ranging from unexplained fatigue to cancers and time after time have seen symptoms decrease and lab values improve in just about every case, every diagnosis.

In fact, the only likely outcome of following this program is feeling happier and healthier, with more energy and a sharper mind.

But every one of our private clients at EPIC Functional Medicine either has a private doctor supervising their program or, more commonly, have a private provider at EPIC that oversees the entirety of their case and care.

So, please, again, if you have medical needs, please be sure to be working with a clinician if you should have any concerns about this program.

That said, there are a few things that I feel compelled to mention:

Type One or Type Two Diabetes, Medicated, With or Without Insulin

We have found that many of our private clients report a decrease in fasting blood sugar, which, for most Americans, is a great thing, given that more than ⅔ of our country is either diabetic or pre-diabetic.

And while a good thing, overall, we have also observed that when a client is using blood sugar medications (both insulin and non-insulin medications), sometimes the blood sugar can fall low. This is because the medicine was prescribed for a person eating a different diet with a more unhealthy blood sugar - see how quickly things can change?

For this reason, we recommend that if you are taking any diabetes medication, insulin or non-insulin, please let your doctor know the above observations and s/he will be better-prepared to make dose adjustments and instruct you as-to necessary monitoring or possible other treatment options, if deemed appropriate.

Kidney/Renal Disease

While we have not seen this, I have read enough cases of oxalate issues leading to kidney stones or kidney disease that I always say, again, make sure to have doctor-supervision, rotate the foods you eat regularly, and eat foods lower in oxalates. Oxalates are primarily found in these otherwise on-plan foods:

  • Spinach
  • Rhubarb
  • *Almonds and cashews (*It is recommended that nuts and seeds are avoided the first time completing the EPIC Five Plan Detox and then following the guideline to reintroduce food slowly as outlined later in this guide book)
  • Beets
  • Cacao
  • Okra
  • Raspberries
  • Stevia sweeteners
  • Sweet potatoes

If you have been placed on another diet (e.g., low potassium diet), please have your doctor use the included EPIC Five Shopping List to help customize a diet for your needs. If you are an EPIC client, one of our EPIC Health Coaches will be glad to help.

Any Other Medical Concerns

Although this program is extraordinarily safe and the chances are you will only get healthier by following along, the reality is that any other medical concerns should be discussed with your personal healthcare provider.
